Waltz for your wedding dance – classic vs. modern

The first dance is one of the most important and certainly the most impressive moments of a wedding ceremony. When preparing for it, most couples focus on the choreography and the song that caught their ear. They want it to be spectacular, romantic and moving.

Less often they think about a particular dance style. So today we will talk about two classics: the Viennese Waltz and the Slow Waltz. If you are wondering which one to choose for your wedding, be sure to read this comparison!

Waltz for a wedding - which one to choose?

The Slow Waltz (also known as English Waltz) is full of delicate, slightly wavy movements, so that we can get a beautiful, subtle effect of falling and rising. It is a slow style and relatively easy to learn, so it is often recommended to people who are not very confident on the dance floor. It is also the perfect choice in cases where the bride’s wedding dress restricts her movements in any way.

On the other hand, we have the Viennese waltz: more dynamic, energetic and impressive. Which means that with choreography based just on it, we can give an incredible show. While in the case of English one we are dealing with a characteristic rise and fall, in the Viennese waltz it is all about spinning.

The wedding dance choreographies you’ll find on our site can be based entirely on Viennese or English dance. They can also incorporate elements of these dances combined with other styles.

Viennese waltz - first dance in classical style

A style very popular with brides and grooms is the Viennese waltz. Why? Because they want their performance to be a knockout and an unforgettable experience for the rest of their lives. That’s why they spend their time and lots of energy preparing for their first dance. However, this does not mean that the Viennese waltz is complicated – it’s quite the opposite. The basic steps are very simple to master.

It means that you can get such an electrifying effect just by basing your choreography on the Viennese waltz. You can see it by yourself. Just check out what choreographies by Dance From Home were based on it.

Viennese waltz for the first dance - what songs to consider?

Waltz is not only a dance, it is also a musical genre. And here are some of those most famous pieces:

Gramophone Waltz (Eugen Doga) – this is a piece by a Moldavian composer, which was first danced to in 1932. We have prepared an impressive arrangement for it.
Shostakievich’s Waltz – have you dreamed of the first dance in classical rhythms? This piece – also known as Waltz No. 2 – is an ideal choice for everyone.

The Blue Danube Waltz – Strauss

And here is our TOP 5 list of classic Viennese waltzes for the first wedding dance:

Although among the Viennese choreographies we have only the classics, this does not mean, of course, that we have not prepared for you any arrangements based on more modern pieces. If you want to try something a little more contemporary, you can dance your first dance to the following songs:

English waltz first dance – for couples opting for slower choreography

After the classic Viennese part, it’s time for songs from the 21st century, for which we prepared choreographies based on the English waltz. Here are some of them:

Choreography based on the English waltz is calmer, and you can easily get a flowing effect on the dance floor. The steps are also easy to learn and definitely slower than the Viennese waltz.
